Balian is a small idyllic little town on the upper west coast of Bali, roughly 2,5 hours away from the Ngurah Rai Airport. For those wanting to escape the hustle and bustle of Kuta and Seminyak, Balian offers that very laidback vibe with an old school surfers touch to it. There are many places to have great food, Indonesian and Western style
The beach defines itself by a wide stretch of black sand, with a river mouth beach break which is a fairly consistent swell magnet. This makes it that this hippy-like town attracts many surfers and beach lovers who simple love to watch the action around, as well as those who love to be out of traffic. The ambiance, the feel, the look radiates: relaxation.
The main reason to visit Balian is for the surf. The main break is a reliable swell magnet and the waves are usually bigger than the spots in the south. The wave is an A-frame in front of a river mouth, where the left runs longer than the right. Balian is not a major surf destination and won’t be as crowded as all the well known west-coast spots. Around the area there are many unknown surf spots to explore and if you follow the main road for 30 minutes north, you will find Medewi, another great surf spot with maybe Bali’s longest left.
